In “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” Taylor shares her disappointment at a previous ex. Although fans speculated the song to be about Joe Alwyn, Taylor seems to be addressing Matty Healy. Following her breakup with Joe, Taylor allegedly dated Matty during the summer of 2023. However, the situation did not last long. In response to his actions and words, she expresses disbelief and disgust throughout the song.
Similar to other songs on this album, Taylor utilizes her vocals to echo feelings of frustration and agitation. Aaron also employed a piano and synth to create an atmosphere of disappointment. In an uncommon occurrence, Taylor targets her ex’s manhood and integrity throughout the song. Other songs in her discography with a similar connotation include “Mr. Perfectly Fine (Taylor’s Version),” and “I Forgot You Existed.”
