REVIEW BY: Michael Delgado
The always experimental, often exceptional, Spoon return with their 5th album, GIMME FICTION. Whether upbeat or downbeat, the songs have the rhythm of a metronome, like a funky two-step shuffle, back and forth and back and forth. It’s a comfortable pattern to lose yourself in when blanketed by a variety of instruments and sound effects. A bed Spoon fans are familiar with. Although, the bed may feel too snug, this time out. The simple, radio-friendly songs may sound bland compared to offerings from the band’s past, but tracks like, “I Turn The Camera On”, “Merchants Of Soul”, or “The Delicate Place”—where it sounds like the guitar is dribbling out of the speakers—have enough crunching, chirping, ticking, tap-shoe slapping and skewed vocal pitch to keep you comfortable in Spoon-dreamland.
