The best-selling girl group of all the times. ICONIC. LEGENDARY. They brought GIRL POWER to the pop culture. And say whatever you want but SPICE is one of the best pop albums EVER MADE.

I see so many theories about Avril and Britney being replaced by impostors - but where are my internet detectives searching for the original Ginger?!

Absolutely, the Spice Girls are top-notch, almost on par with the Supremes. I'd rate them even higher, considering they penned their own tunes, you know.

while i'm asking questions: does anyone know why "2 become 1" was omitted from the hong kong version of the album? maybe just prudish censorship (?) but either way it seems like there'd be a story there...

censorship because of the suggestive lyrics i read that in a magazine at the time

You shall not remind the Chinese of fucking. One-child policy was implemented between 1979 and 2015.

then shouldn’t they love this contraception anthem? jk (also HK was doing its own thing until, very sadly, just a few years ago; for example there was never any one-child policy there and actually a lot of mainland residents dropped down to HK to give birth to their second child)

can anyone tell me where the audio comes from in the “Shall We Say ‘Goodbye’ Then?" track at the end of spice25? like what event or occasion where it was recorded?

lastly: what about the so-called "Unlimited Groove" 12-inch mix of ""Love Thing?" it is one of the spice25 tracks that are *not* listed as being previously unreleased, but no matter how much i search, i can't find any release of it prior to spice25...so where is it from originally?

If you really want to see an example of peak Spice Girls popularity, watch the performance of Who Do You Think You Are at the 1997 Brit Awards on YouTube. For a bit of backstory, they'd spent the previous nine months ascending to a level of popularity not seen since The Beatles, topped the charts all over the world, two million-selling UK singles, every song went to No.1, a stranglehold over the album charts, were instrumental in quadrupling the sales of music magazines, and had just achieved No.1 on the American charts. The Brits were their 'homecoming' performance and the Union Jack dress that Geri Halliwell wore was a signifier of their utter dominance. Everyone at school was talking about this performance the next day - even my teachers! You think Gaga was big? Taylor Swift is now? They don't come close to the Spice Girls. You could not move or think other than Spicemania as a young child growing up in Britain. We will never see the likes of them again.

I had their live in Istanbul concert on VHS and I remember watching it over and over. I knew every dance move by heart. Good times.

Teens today have zero idea how massive the Spice Girls were. I was 10 when they hit and they were literally all-encompassing for tens of millions people around the world. Completely unescapable. Even your grandma knew the names of all five.

Exactly, I was 7 when Spice Girls broke through in the States in '97. They were all over the radio and MTV as far as I remember.

Ahah! That's understandable. I actually love to repeat songs over and over, but if I didn't like them, I think I'd be just like you. I was gonna ask if you were an All Saints fan instead, bc I know back in the UK, these two groups were pinned against each other. I listen to them, too, but they don't compare to the SG for me.

Straight up! They're a blast now. It's hard to say if it's because they're retro, or because my tastes & attitude towards music has expanded so much since the 1990s. I think everyone develops a fondness for the music of their adolescence over time though, even if it drove you up the wall at the time.

Oh, I do too. In my youth I used to replay songs back to back for a good hour at a time. It was that typical "headphones on, in bed late at night" brooding over the lyrics deal that was my teenage trademark. My beef with the Spice Girls in the 90s was more to do with my very singular, close minded tastes at the time. Their inescapable presence only exasperated things. But All Saints, & the Spice Girls, although I'd call myself a fan, my knowledge of them both only goes as far as the hits. But wow, I dig 'em a lot. All Saints Pure Shores I rate very highly. It's a lush slice of pop that rivals some of ABBA's best moments & that's heavy praise indeed. I was unaware of the SG vs AS thing. As I got older, the volume of artists I listened to increased tenfold, but that resulted in me not getting to know them as intimately as I did when I had no choice but to obsess over a comparatively much smaller handful of albums. But hey, things change. I love the convenience of the streaming age.

Oh! Wow, I hope you don't mind if I follow you. We don't have super high compatibility, but it's fucking nice to run into a real person that responds with as much detail and thought as you have. I miss that. Things have changed on here sadly, I used to have back and forths about music, etc on my shoutbox but that's gone the way of the Dodo. And I know what you mean. In my teen years, around 2006, if you go to the very beginning of my lastfm I literally listened to only screamo/emo music and J/Cpop bc i was just so hardcore and different. But as I grew up, I've still hung on to foreign music. I don't know. I just love foreign cultures...I even moved to Europe, lol

Don't mind at all. Happy to have you. I don't sweat the compatibility. The two main reasons I'm here is for tracking the music I listen to & discovering new stuff. By that token, I find more benefit in following users who like stuff that's outside of my wheelhouse anyway. I typically don't go starting conversations but being a lover of music, I'll happily partake if someone is so inclined. I'm definitely with you on foreign cultures. I find tremendous appeal in exploring music from all over the world. I remember watching a Korean zombie movie a few years ago which I really ended up digging, so I wound up checking out a bunch of K-Pop & some local classic rock, just to continue my little Korean adventure so to speak. Another time I just randomly wondered to myself what Indian heavy metal'd sound like so I dove down that rabbit hole. Fascinating taking those diversions. Makes returning to your tried & true favourites all the sweeter too, I think.
