Nothing against Barry White, Marvin Gaye etc. But I'd throw this on when I make some sweet love. Just hopefully she'd be into Zappa..

I don't think it's trying to be The Gumbo Variations (a favourite of mine), I think it's a bit more of a free jazz exercise, and a lovely one at that.

Oh, that's not exactly the comparison I was making. I was just looking at them as two early Zappa 16 min+ jam pieces. They sound nothing alike to me, really. It's just that in the W/J version, I really find myself getting lost a lot. The Gumbo Variations never loses me or my interest, and that's why I find it so impressive. Soon I will have heard the Make a Jazz Noise Here version, and then perhaps I can make a more fair comment.

I think it tries too hard to be The Gumbo Variations. It's kind of weak and meandering. The weak point of the album for me, though I do enjoy it anyways. Comparing it to comparable songs, though, such as TGV, The Grand Wazoo, and The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution, I'm not really impressed with Big Swifty. It's lacking in flair and push, I think. Hm.
