“Speed Trials” is the first track and single on ”Either/Or”, and was released on October 1, 1996. The song was recorded on 4-track cassette at Joanna Bolme’s apartment, on SE 34th Ave. at Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland. Due to the quiet recording, and the sonic limitations of 4-track cassette, the song has a unique sound that gives the track a haunting vibe. The song’s ambiguous tonality has been analyzed in-depth by the Society for Music Theory.
