“supernatural“ yields a low-tempo R&B beat, offering several occasions of reverb to build upon the celestial imagery in this track.
“supernatural“ in its simplest terminology, from Merriam-Webster means “of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe” In relation to both the nature of the film this album is based on ’Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ as well as Ariana’s own personal affairs – this term directly correlates, in emotion, to how Ariana feels ‘inseperable’; feeling it take over her entire state of mind, and not minding at all.
She constructs this sense through extended metaphors and semantics of togetherness, like when she states the situation is akin ‘like the moon needs the stars’ – the celestial nature suggested here may also be an allusion towards sexual intercourse, likening an orgasm to a supernatural experience.
Ariana is also heavily superstitious, believing in the ‘supernatural’, therefore, it is fitting how Ariana suggests that it is some exterior power pulling them together, not fighting it as it’s part of the being's will.
