“I Heard Love Is Blind” unapologetically tackles the themes of infidelity and whimsically cheating on one’s partner.

Winehouse, who has stated that the song does not reenact a situation from her own life, flips the stereotype of men being infidel with no guilt, putting a woman in the position of cheating with no moral consequences. The song serves as a conversation in which Amy attempts to justify her infidelity to her boyfriend, as well as herself.

The song was one of the songs Winehouse performed during her audition with Island Records back in 2002 before she was officially signed.

Winehouse expanded on the meaning of “I Heard Love Is Blind” during an interview in November 2003, explaining:

This is actually – even though I did say all personal – this is one that is not personal. It’s kind of a character study about, um – I like it – it’s very appropriate for now because it’s like a role reversal of what, you know, the typical man that cheats, and he’s such a pig so he says to his girlfriend, “Oh, look honey, I cheated on you, but it’s okay because she looked like you.“ It’s like my take on that – it’s my role reversal of that.
