Ultimately a one-off side project of David Matthews (arranger/bandleader for James Brown), The Grodeck Whipperjenny is an experimental psychedelic funk album whose sound could best be compared to it's parallel counterpart Sho Is Funky Down Here (1971). While the latter's instrumental finesse is credited to Brown's discography, The Grodeck Whipperjenny stands alone and represents possibly the deepest contemporary exploration of the intersection of funk music and unbridled psychedelia.
