AEO Independent Portuguese-Speaking Artists
Jul 5 2008, 20h35 por kb7clx
I’ve recently started a group for Portuguese speaking artists who are last.fm listeners, and their fans, Artistas e Ouvintes. I thought it would be fun to help artists who might not speak English to promote their music on the site, and my plan for that includes airing it in some of the English speaking groups for artists and listeners, so here goes.
I’ll start off by giving a link to our group radio which consists mostly of connected artists,
and entirely of independent ones.
-
-
-
Listen to our group radio here:
-
-

-
Nearly all of these artists have free tracks for download.
-
-
If you've listened to any of these artists and enjoyed their music please leave a comment.

Now let’s get into it. The artists with features in this journal will only be the ones who are members of my group who have music here in last.fm or somewhere else where I can find it, but not all connected artists. Not all connected artists are members. I will however list the non-member connected artists at the end to connect them. To save time I have cut and pasted from the decent wikis, roughly translated others. Despite the title there will be the occasional artist who does not speak Portuguese, I have one English-only speaker in the group, and I have invited a Spanish speaker or 2. The first up does not speak Portuguese, but has been very supportive of my activities with this group, and one of the founding members.

is a pop rock band from Rio formed in 2002 who's name comes from the fact that they're from the southern hemisphere. They claim as influences international greats such as Bon Jovi,
U2, and Lenny Kravitz, and great Brazilian rockers
such as Barão Vermelho and Os Paralamas do Sucesso.
The band has a sound all it’s own, and came about through a union of friends looking to have fun and make lots of noise. Some years later they matured as a band, looking toward rock and roll and pop for their essence.
Band members are Gustavo (vocals and bass), Ricardo (guitar), Paulo (guitar), Giovani (keyboard), and Wagner (drums).

Brazilian alternative rock, started by two young men from Rio, veterans of the underground sceen there, drummer Pedro Garcia and guitarist Nobru Pederneiras got their feet wet at the beginning of the 90s with a skater-punk band, Cabeça. Pedro continued his career playing with Planet Hemp, and Seletores de Freqüência, ex-Planet member BNegão’s funk-dub-philosophical-spiritual band, which Nobru was recently a part of as bass player. From that band also came yet one more member of Rockz, guitarist Gabriel Muzak,, who has a solo career and was also part of
Funk Fuckers, BNegão’s first band. Finally from Benflos, another fine band from Rio, came bassist Daniel Martins who also plays with Lobão), and singer Diogo Brandão as well.
Their sound is influenced by Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, and all that those bands brought over from the 80s, but with the dirtiest lowdown stuff buried in the 60s and 70s from bands like The Rolling Stones, The Who, Sex Pistols. With danceable rhythms on the drums, and bass that speaks with a punk accent. Two guitars making it heavy while the rest add robotic arpeggios and weird chords. Their songs sing of love, dramatic, nihilistic, bitter, diverse subjects such as "love is just a tasteless, badly told joke").

20 de Julho continues to be a solo project as Thiago hasn't yet found anyone

with his sound editor and creator Fruity Loops 7. He records his vocals and guitar
parts directly to the PC and mixed with Adobe Audition 3.0. The name 20 de Julho

is a four-piece out of Montreal. The band is an emotionally charged hard rock band with a middle-eastern influence, driven by impassioned vocals and inspired lyrics. What sets them apart from the crowd is an outstanding commitment to their sound, an elevated level of intensity on stage, and an exceptional understanding of the songwriting and recording processes.
Originating over 3 years ago, and with one record under their belts, the band continues to further develop their sound and dedication to the music. Striving to avoid predictability and convenience, they focus on writing hard-hitting rock that remains powerful both in studio and on stage. The resulting sound aptly reflects the energy and intention of each musician, individually and as a whole.
The debut album "community" is in stores now across Quebec. Over the next year, the band, together with Be Known Productions, will be promoting the independently produced album through live shows, as well as marketing and shipping it to labels.

born João Luiz Woerdenbag Filho (Rio de Janeiro, October 11, 1957) is a Brazilian rock and MPB singer. He also plays the drums and guitar. Lobão has a reputation for having little inhibition in expressing his opinions bluntly and publicly criticising fellow musicians, which led to a notable number of attrictions and
enmities.
His best-known recent attriction is a break-up with the record industry. Claiming that all major labels are conspiring to deceive their own artists (by underreporting sales and using piracy as a scapegoat), he set an independent distribution plan to sell music CDs on newsstands and the Internet.
Thus far, this endeavor has been very successful: his recent albums sold well and were critically acclaimed. He also created a magazine, Outracoisa (literally: "Somethingelse" or "Anotherthing"), which comes bundled with a music CD of independent artists.

a name that may sound strange on first hearing, a strangeness that is sometimes reflected in their sound. The themes of their lyrics go from introspective reflections, movie-like imagery, quotes, as well as lyricism, and subtle touches of humor. The sound runs from dissonant textures to sunny atmospheres. For those seeking a more objective and simple definition, Benflos is a rock band. Their live performances are theatrical and use audiovisual elements beyond the norm like a cute little harakiri, a contrasceptive method that involves asfixiation, personal hygiene lessons on a grand scale, explosive minimalist carnaval, and small exotic musical instruments. All mixed in with the music, serving up a sort of experimental/eccentric/cabaré.
Band members:
Daniel Martins bass, guitar, drums and studio backup, studies music licensure at the Unirio, has played with Bia Grabois, Maurício Negão, and now plays with Lobão, Marya Bravo,

Horde idealized on July 1995 by Crom Wisdom Worshipper, after parting ways with Dark Subconscious - his former band with members of the act now known as Tuatha de Danann.
After years of struggle, Barbarian Warriors in Search of Wisdom is now releasing their debut album, in a completely independent way: “Paganheart”. With a length of 77:40 minutes, this craft is a journey through 9 hymns. The highlight would be the title track - a majestic epic running for 30:33 minutes.
Their cries and poems deal mostly with Paganism, the old times, ancient wisdom, the Medieval Age, ancestral cultures, and the quest for knowledge.
With this artifact - the “Paganheart” album - the Horde intends to perform live in several celebrations and conquer their space on the international Metal scene, spreading their art and continuing their eternal search for wisdom.

«Portuguese musician José Paulo Andrade is a former member of 80's urban folk band
Ocaso Épico (bass player), known for its mind-blowing performances at the extinct
lisbon venue Rock Rendez Vous (RRV). He also played guitar in a rock band called V12. Ocaso épico released one album - 'Muito Obrigado' - in 1988 and was ready to record its second one some years later when band leader and mentor Farinha Master died unexpectedly, putting a premature end to the project. the remaining members scattered and José
began learning and exploring new tools, mainly software based ones.
5 Dimensões
EP' is the result of his 3 year evolution journey as Gamma Ray Blast, in which he gathered influences from the 90's so-called 'ambient' precursors, such as Kruder & Dorfmeister,
Thievery Corporation and Badmarsh, among others, all wrapped up under a genuine Sci-Fi feel. Gamma Ray Blast operates on a lush and soothing beat base, very melodical, mixed with oriental and traditional portuguese elements, such as sitar, portuguese guitar (mainly used in the Fado genre), flutes and percussion.
A bit about the last 3 pieces, starting with the 3rd one Called
Paredes which is a humble homage to the late
Carlos Paredes, a true genius of the Portuguese Guitar. It contains a couple
of samples from his work, like the song
Verdes anos one of his most known ones. Fourth track
Grândola is another homage, but this one is dedicated to the April
25th political revolution that freed Portuguese people from the dictatorship regime,
back in 1974, where we can hear
José Afonso sing the words of the first song to be
played on the (at last) censorship-liberated radio, Grândola Vila Morena. Musically, these two songs show the strenght of their dramatic and political meaning, but also
the smoothness of lounge electronic music. Last track is an original from Ocaso Épico/Farinha
Master, reworked, called
Adamastor.

is a rock band formed in 1995 in A Coruña Spain by Joel Varela. Current band members are Joel Varela, (vocals and guitar), Miguel Thomas (guitar), Iago Blanco (percussion and backup), and Álex Rapitis (bass).
In 1995 two classmates decided to put together a music band. A band that would allow them to express their feelings, frustrations, emotions, joys and sadness, but above all a way to enjoy the music that was being so influential during this time.
After many changes to the band name as well as members, arose SHINE, a group formed in A Coruña, Spain, that has, with their own original compositions in English, developed a very special live performance that has gained many followers, especially in the provinces of Galícia and Andalucia Spain.
This very talented band reflects the life experiences of it's members in the words of their songs.
They have just recorded their first album named
Ungravity, from which they have edited a special release
Leadless, which you can listen to on their MySpace page.

(panda head in English):
An ursid originating in the cold Chinese mountains moves to Rio De Janeiro in search of a warmer climate and a more varied diet. Inspired by the stories of the journey and the adventurous spirit of this nearly extinct migrant, three musicians, in 2007, formed a rock band with multiple personality and a bipolar temperament. Dark and psychedelic, regressive and progressive, revisionist and visionary.
Cabeza de Pandas lyrics range from complete cynicism to the purest sincerity, and the music arrangements alternate between tranquil and hard, but always in the service of involved melodies and riffs, in songs that are straight-forward and wandering at the same time. An intensity of rock filtered through various lenses, with something new around every corner. Difficult to explain, much better if you just listen.
ALEXANDRE VAZ (guitar and vocals), LOURENÇO MONTEIRO (drums and vocals) and MAURO
BERMAN (bass and keyboards) make up CABEZA DE PANDA.
The three members are part of the band that currently accompanies the rapper Marcelo D2. Previously they have played and recorded with artists such as
Toni Garrido, Thalma de Freitas, Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Dado Villa-Lobos, Arnaldo Brandão, Fernanda Abreu and many others.
Starting the year 2008 off right, Cabeza de Panda played the festival Humaitá
pra Peixe, in a show which had a very positive outcome in write-ups in the Jornal do Brasil, and specialized blogs. During the week of January 21 to 28 the band was placed among those bands featured on the main page of MySpace Brasil Música.

"With her eclectic sets, Dj Blush proves that a club DJ is not limited to the overplayed thumping techno beat. Her influences bounce around from experimental founding fathers Kraftwerk, to the oversampled Daft Punk spun with the synthpop merriment of Depeche Mode, strung with the indie sounds of groups like Le Tigre and The Gossip."
Dj Blush is a female DJ in São Paulo, Brazil. Very eclectic, fan of mixes and best of electro [pop/rock], post-punk rock, minimal and synth pop styles from the alternative scene.

is a band from Curitiba in the southeastern Brazilian state of Paraná with it’s own sound formed at the beginning of 2007 with the musical goal to rescue and update thrash metal, relying on musical elements present in productions during the 80s, together with elements of current productions within the style, intending in this way to create a new conception of the style, different from what has gone before or is currently being produced. Soon REDTIE was presenting a rapid and aggressive sound, with lyrics in English which contemplate such themes as politics, violence, film and history.
*
Why REDTIE?
*
*
Warning: graphic descriptions of violence!
*
*
During the War of Canudos, in the third invasion against Antonio Conselheiro’s religious fanatics and their rogue settlement at Canudos in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia, colonel Moreira Morais, at the head of the republican army, enacted a practice of extermination, which counted on a strong psychological impact. It consisted of public throat-cuttings of armed prisoners. The descriptions of eyewitness accounts and war correspondence made it clear that things proceeded in the following manner: the executioner positioned himself behind the prisoner, stabbing him in the throat while pulling his head back by the hair, and then inserting two fingers of his left hand in the prisoner’s nostrils he slit the prisoner’s throat with the large knife in his right hand, causing the blood to flow down from the throat across the front of the body. In English this practice was nicknamed the red tie, having already been used during the federalist revolution, however it only became well known throughout Brazil during the War of Canudos.

(in English “five rivers”), define their sound as contemporary Brazilian music influenced by British and alternative rock, with lyrics in Portuguese which search out poetic and melancholic images.
Many images may be found among waters and sonorous harmonies, like a joining together of many tributaries.
Their sound promises the richness of a river, the confluence of styles, rhythms, and melodic ideas, giving this band from Minas Gerais Brazil an authentic sound of their own. With their songs coming from diverse sources of creativity, the five “rivers” who make up the band seek, via the integration of their experiences, memories and individual techniques, to give a volume and personality to songs whose uniqueness lies at the meeting of mpb (música popular brasileira = Brazilian popular music), and the power of rock.
Making up the band are violinists and guitarists João Eduardo e Tiago Capute, drummer Fabrício Galvani, bass player Bruno César, and pianist and singer Maurício Silva Jr.
If the influences of the members run from Chico Buarque to
Neil Young, the affinities of music apreciation turn toward bands and musicians like Radiohead, Nick Cave, R.E.M., Coldplay, Wilco,
Legião Urbana and Los Hermanos.
In some manner, there are vestiges of such bands in the music of Cinco “Rios”. These are expressed in combination with the personal touches of each member, “drain” into the band’s light and melancholic harmonies. In August of 2006, at the Teatro Marília, Cinco Rios gave a performance debuting the release of their first CD,
Ecos da Cidade. Recorded at Casa Antiga studio, the CD includes 13 tracks. The songs of this inaugural album reveals the band’s sound, melancholic and charistically urban at the same time. Beyond the final reverberations in the local media of the state of Minas Gerais, Ecos da cidade was cited as the best independent album of 2006 by the magazine Revista Laboratório Pop and the website Dynamite Online. Also, in 2006, a song by Cinza (Maurício Silva Jr./João Eduardo) gained the title of Best Song of the Year in the contest on (JB On line), Jornal do Brasil’s website.

was born on February 7, 1990 in the city of Jacobina, in the Brazilian state of Bahia in the northeast of Brazil.
Weick’s music career began in 2006 when he recorded his first oriental musical experience, a cover of Hiiragi, originally by Japanese pop-rock band Do As Infinity. From then on Yasutora-san has tried to focus on doing more such projects in the genre, covering hallowed artists of the Asian music scene.
In the beginning, his repertoir included songs from his favorite band,
Do As Infinity, in adition to the music of solo female singer YUI, but Weick didn’t stop there. Up to a point he had only released fairly simple songs, but soon he began to turn out more solid and better elaborated pieces.
Weick Yasutora’s digital music career took it’s first steps in the beginning of 2008, when on February 3rd he released his first single Shadowy lights. (aurora, by the band Do As Infinity, Ai no uta (のいうた Love Song), by female singer 倖田來未 and No way to say, by 浜崎あゆみ. Somewhere between 30 and 40 copies have been downloaded from his 4shared site according to their servers, not counting downloads on last.fm.

(which means John Dreams of the Void) is a project started about 3 years ago in Portugal by João Vasconcelos, focused on producing electronica without a specific sub-genre. The artist says
-
"I'd like to be able to identify the genre of music I make, but I really can't. I just like to experiment with sounds until I find the right sounds for a tune and then dream a melody, a beat, a bassline, a sound effect, etc. at the same time keeping in mind the emotions and thoughts connected through whichever thing, person, place, book, etc. which made me do the tune. So they are mirrors, my tunes, and I'll make sure these mirrors reflect the most interesting parts of what my brain and heart can think and feel."

The artist has also contributed to the project Iberik Ambassadors

Jdvoid has been making music with computers since he was 7. He made a version of Elvis Presley's "Love me Tender" on a 48k Timex. Years later, after studying classical guitar for about 5 years, and learning how to play keyboards at home, he had contact with sequencing on a computer with Scream Tracker, a PC version of his old Amiga. mod sequencer. Since then his life has taken a lot of turns, and he spent long periods of time away from computers (close to guitars and percussion). ...Until about three years ago, when he got a laptop and the JdvOid project was born, giving him a "place" to finally try to express himself through sound.

"The main thing that ties this JdvOid thing together is the fact that all the music produced represents a specific moment, person, some happening or experience that I (we) have been (or am going) through at some point in my life."

was formed at the end of 2002 in the mountainous landscape of the city of Petrópolis, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro by five friends ready to do what they needed to do to produce a creative, harmonious, close, and overall sincere sound.
With heavy guitars, great vocal and bass melodies, and a strong and solid drum section, Cyius accentuates their music not only with the strong and marked presence of their guitars, but also with their sonorous and mature lyrics, which in adition to personal subjects, address subjects sociopolitical in nature, which reveal the reality of the postmodern world.
The lyrics are made up of poetry and optimistic messages, balanced by a heavy, close-knit sound influenced by the twists and turns of everyday life, and by the quest for victories in the current situation/stageplay in which we live.
In their shows, the band gambles on a repertoir of their own compositions, picking the greater part of their first cd titled Onde Quer Que Esteja (Wherever You Are) which will be released sometime this year, and always striving to play with plenty of bite and all the sincerity that a band can have when they step up on that stage.

is a progressive rock band from the greater metropolitan area of
São Paulo Brazil formed in mid 2007.
Band members are Rodrigo Nunes (vocals and guitar), Edu Bento (bass) and
Caique Bulldog (drums).

Influences
14 Bis, O Terço, Pink Floyd,
The Beatles etc...

BEGINNINGS
Despite knowing one another in grammar school days, their musical affinity began in high school, where Rodrigo Nunes and Edu Bento constantly shared ideas about their intentions as musicians. In the beginning they met in between classes and on weekends at Edu Bento’s house. At this time, Rodrigo got together with Marcelo Rocha, a good friend and great font of general rock knowledge, and they formed a hobby practice duo. Marcelo brought with him many musical influences, one of these being progressive rock.
In the middle of 2002, after a long conversation between Edu Bento, Rodrigo Nunes and Marcelo Rocha, they decided to form a trio called
-
-
Milícia Celeste.
That union was very useful to the three friends in question, it was the beginning of the development and musical identity of Rodrigo, Edu and Marcelo as a unit. It went so briliantly well that after three consecutive months of practice, the trio already had a sound very much their own. It was during this same period that a strong song writing collaboration between Edu and Rodrigo got going.
A year after the formation of Milícia Celeste, changes in their lives were such that each member began to follow his own path, resulting in the breakup of the group.
After this period, at somewhere around 2003/2004, Edu entered into a great odissy through a succession of innumerable bands of varying flavors of rock, (from
punk rock to heavy metal), conferring to him a wide range of musical experience. Meanwhile Rodrigo was also developing his skills playing with some childhood friends in a neighborhood parish where he lived. Even though they were enjoying a certain amount of success on the paths they had taken, they felt the absence of that finely tuned sound they had back in the days of “Milícia Celeste”, thus as time went on the impetus grew stronger and more necessary For Rodrigo and Edu to reunite and to recapture their friendship and musical affinity obfuscated by the passing of time.

THE REUNION
And so, after a long wait of about four years Rodrigo and Edu were able to get back together again to pick up where they’d left off, restarting the old projects, arranging songs that had been written in the past, devising a new repertoir, putting even more feeling into their music, and planning the formation of another band.
After a few months of practice, they took the initiative to look for a good drummer, someone who above all else would be perfectly in tune with the band and who’s style would not be as aggressive as that of the majority of current rock drummers. Searching their memories, Edu and Rodrigo remembered a little admirer of both their careers in the early years. This friend in question was Caique “Bulldog” Barbosa, brother of a good friend of Edu’s and Rodrigo’s. Caique Bulldog loved the drums and had a powerful desire to become a great rock drummer. Even back when Edu and Rodrigo had been part of the trio with Marcelo Rocha in 2003, Caique Bulldog, only ten years old, started taking drum lessons and beginning his path to his chosen goal. But noone had imagined that his musical development would be so qualitative in such a short time, turning him into an incredibly versatile and highly creative drummer, indispensable ingredients for a progressive rock band.
-
A MUTUAL AGREEMENT IS ESTABLISHED
These were the the crucial reasons for the duo of Rodrigo Nunes and Edu Bento to invite Caique to be an integral part of this new group in mid 2007. He didn’t hesitate to accept the friends’ invitation with great joy and exuberance. Thus began this power-trio which didn’t have a name yet.
During the next three months, the trio’s greatest concern was finding a name which would faithfully represent the soul of the band. But finally, what would be the most appropriate name? The question was present in all of their minds, until a moment came that in an online conversation between Edu and Rodrigo, they started talking about how to describe in a few words what the principal characteristics or highlights of the trio would be. They eventually came to the conclusion that the common thread was the fact that they were so in tune with one another. So with a central, common and unconditional idea about the band, Edu Bento reluctantly consulted a dictionary in order to come up with a synonym of the word “sintonia (syntony)”, whereupon he found two nouns, “Acordo Mútuo (Mutual Agreement”. On seeing these words all agreed that without doubt this was a name that best defined the soul of the group. From that moment on the group would be known as Acordo Mútuo.

Picante pero sabroso, (spicy but tasty) just like in Llorona, the song which is the theme for Frida Khalo, Pimenta Buena's music played by Brazilians Daniel Finkler, André Chiesa,
João Corrêa, and the Uruguayan Vicente Botti, includes the development and sophistication of both Latin and Brazilian music, which layers strong melodies that never lose their tenderness atop an aggressive and harmonious sound.

EnoughRecords is a Portuguese netlabel, there are other few netlabels from Portugal, but we happened to be the first. Deeply rooted in the demoscene culture, our path towards world domination consists on distributing music we enjoy listening to - from friendly people who want to release through us - for free.
"We are heavily obsessed with the beauty locked within music and the disturbingly immense power of computers in modern society. We also feel the world has been littered and misguided with ergonomic pop formulas for too long, and although we acknowledge that we can't really change the music industry, nor guerrilla market ourselves to popular stardom, we still strive to provide alternatives for artists and listeners who share our taste in bedroom-studio music. We believe music should be free. So if you enjoyed listening to one of our releases, share it with your friends and the world, just don't charge money for it and try to mention it was released at Enough. Above all, let the artists know their music is beeing played, heard, understood and enjoyed by other people across the globe.
We slowly came to realize we pursue a focus of idm, glitch, postrock, industrial noise and dark ambient. However, we are open to other genres as long as it sounds good and clicks something inside of us. Our plan is to simply release soothing sounds, emerging landscapes, from Portugal, Europe, the world, into the cyberspace for whomever will listen. And hopefully meet some friendly talented people while we are at it. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.. ;)
